As an increasing amount of older adults struggle with homelessness, Milwaukee groups intervene

​​

Guest House of Milwaukee CEO Steve Bauer shared news that the agency is preparing a room for older men experiencing homelessness, which can house up to 22 individuals. Bauer said since the pandemic, there has been an increase of older adults struggling with homelessness that use Guest House services.

Cream City Gardens receives a generous grant and many helping hands to make important improvements to this unique community space.

 

Guest House of Milwaukee received one of 100 Lowe's hometown grants nationwide to renovate our kitchen and garden spaces. Volunteers and Lowe's employees came out to Cream City Gardens to place new garden beds and get the space ready for our next planting season!​

Several organizations helping to keep people who are homeless warm during bitter cold snap

With Wisconsin experiencing its lowest temperatures of the season yet, Guest House is stepping up for those who need shelter from the elements. In the first year of a city wide coordinated effort to provide as many people as possible with shelter during the winter, "the need is real as seen last night with the cold and the snow. All of the shelters were over capacity to help those that wanted to get in for the night,” said Interim CEO Stephen Bauer.

Milwaukee warming shelters working to meet demand ahead of anticipated worsening weather

Right now, about 175 people are accessing those shelters on an average night, but that need is expected to increase as the weather gets even colder. To illustrate the need for these resources: men lined up Wednesday afternoon outside Guest House of Milwaukee more than three hours before that warming shelter would open its doors. With conditions expected to worsen in the coming days, community advocates are working to expand capacity across the city.

Overnight warming centers to open in Milwaukee next week as temperatures dip

City of Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson held a press conference at Guest House this morning, announcing plans with the Milwaukee Coalition on Housing and Homelessness for six overnight warming centers to open their doors on December 4 - serving 200 people in need this season. Guest House will be providing 22 beds as part of this coordinated effort.

Milwaukee meal donations helping others

Fox6 caught up with Cafe Benelux, a Lowlands Group restaurant, as they prepared and delivered a meal to be served by a local family at Guest House. Lowlands Group has been supporting Guest House of Milwaukee's meal program with contributions such as this one for 10 years!

Guest House of Milwaukee partners with local restaurant to provide monthly meals through the support of an anonymous donor.

A special delivery from Daddy's Soul Food & Grille, so special the owner himself delivers it in warming trays. "It's great to give back because someone has given to me many, many times," said owner Bennie Smith.

Long-time volunteer serves his 150th meal at Guest House

Carl Johnson has been coordinating meals with his church, St. Matthew’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Wauwatosa, every month since 2010. Sunday night marked his 150th meal for the men staying at the shelter. TMJ4 and Fox6 News came by to capture the milestone.
